In an ongoing effort to show Vanguard student-athletes as more than just a number in a jersey, Vanguard Athletics is pleased to announce a new regular web series titled "A Lions Heart". In this, the student-athlete takes the reigns discussing their relationship with Christ, their Vanguard experience, and a little more about their daily life.
LA MIRADA, Calif. – For the second time in less than a week, the Lions (11-5-1) competed in a do-or-die match in the GSAC Tournament and both of the games could not be decided in regulation. The high scoring affair for the first 50 minutes of the game settled down as the game-winning goal was netted by Menlo College (14-4-1) just 4:25 into the overtime period.
COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Golden State Athletic Conference released the latest edition of Players of the Week, and the Lions swept both awards for men's soccer. Brandon Gomez (JR/Los Angeles, CA) earns his second straight Defensive Player of the Week and fourth overall this season. Juan Arellano (SR/Hawthorne, CA) had an impressive showing in the Conference Tournament First Round to take home the recognition for the first time this year. Gomez, was crucial in the Blue and Gold beating Biola in the penalty kick shootout as he blocked two of the Eagles shots and them calmly sank the game-winning PK. Meanwhile, Arellano was just as necessary as he scored the first two goals of the day for the Pride and drilled a successful penalty kick just before Gomez.
COSTA MESA, Calif. – Intense. The first word that comes to mind when talking about Biola (10-6-1) and Vanguard's GSAC Tournament First Round contest is intensity. Neither team wanted to blink, as their seasons rested on the outcome of this game. After a 3-3 tie in the end of double overtime, the game moved into a shootout where the Lions (11-4-1) came out victorious behind Brandon Gomez (JR/Los Angeles, CA)'s PK shot.
COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions have qualified for the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament for both the men's and women's teams. The Vanguard Women, currently ranked sixth in the nation, won the GSAC Regular Season Title and earned the #1 Seed in the upcoming tournament for only the third time in program history. This has advanced them past the first round with a bye and all the way through to the Championship Host Site. This year, similar to last year, the predetermine location for the Semifinals and Championship was Biola University. On the men's side, a great final week vaulted them all the way to the third seed in the tournament and they will host a First Round game on Vanguard's campus on Saturday, November 5th at 2:00 p.m. A win on Saturday pushes the Blue and Gold to the next site, Biola, to take on #2 Menlo College who earned a first round bye.
Entering the tournament, the Lions earned some top honors as Director of Soccer Randy Dodge was selected as the Co-Coach of the Year on the women's side. Haley Magana (SO/Los Alamitos, CA), Lauren Aronson (JR/Henderson, NV), Haley Bruce (SO/San Diego, CA), and Madison Lopp (JR/Anaheim, CA) received All-GSAC recognition, while for the men Brandon Gomez (JR/Los Angeles, CA), Juan Arellano (SR/Hawthorne, CA), and Josh Davis (SR/Mission Viejo, CA) reach the All-Conference squad for the second straight year.
COSTA MESA, Calif. – Continuing coverage of Golden State Athletic Conference awards, the Lions are pleased to have three players named scholar-athletes for Fall 2016. Three members of the soccer program are recognized including a pair from women's soccer. Kristen Lum (SR/Honolulu, HI) is a repeat winner from last year, while Erica Wadell (JR/Yucaipa, CA) and Nahum Paz (JR/Costa Mesa, CA) join the ranks this season.
