COSTA MESA, Calif. - Gearing up for the 2016-2017 campaign, Vanguard University Cross Country and Track & Field has released their newest recruiting class to the Southern California campus. The 16 incoming athletes will join 14 returning members of the men's team and eight on the women's side.
The season begin in the Fall when the Cross Country squad heads up to running camp in Mammoth Lakes, CA from August 11th-18th before competing in their first official meet on Saturday, September 3rd at 8:00 a.m. They will take part in the Adidas U.C. Irvine Invitational on the UCI ARC Fields course.
GULF SHORES, Ala. - A strong showing in the Men's Decathlon event pushed Winston Lawson (FR/Santa Ana, CA) to a career high 6,801 points. Lawson's two-day point total ranks second all-time for VU in the Decathlon and was the highest score since Steve Alexander's 6,936 point tally in 1974. Earlier this year at the NAIA Indoor National Championships, he finished third in the Heptathlon to earn his first national nod. Lawson's score of 5,009 points in the two-day Heptathlon competition broke his own school record set earlier this season by 176 points.
GULF SHORES, Ala. – Vanguard University sent three athletes from the Men's Track & Field team to compete in the 65th Annual Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships from May 26th-28th at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. Winston Lawson (FR/Santa Ana, CA) placed third in the men's decathlon with a personal best score of 6,801 points this weekend earning his second All-American honors as a Lion. Lawson's two-day point total ranks second all-time for VU in the decathlon and was the highest score since Steve Alexander's 6,936 point tally in 1974. Saturday morning, Zach Hunt (JR/Sparks, NV) raced to a 15th place finish among 56 competitors in the marathon with a time of 2:51:13. This was Hunt's second consecutive year running the marathon at the Outdoor National Championships. The third Lion to compete at the Championships was Zach DeAtley (JR/Victorville, CA) who finished 17th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase final Saturday afternoon with a time of 11:08.94. The NAIA National Championships mark the end of the Athletic Calendar for Vanguard University for the 2015-2016 school year, ending on a high note with the solid showings from Lawson, Hunt, and Detley on behalf of all members of the Blue and Gold.

Through the first five events, he is sitting in second place. Day Two starts today at 10:00 a.m. and includes the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. Saturday, tomorrow, Zach Hunt (JR/Sparks, NV) runs the marathon at 6:00 a.m. followed by Zach DeAtley (JR/Victorville, CA) in the 3000m steeplechase final at 2:00 p.m.
EAGLEROCK, Calif. - In a final effort to qualify for the NAIA Outdoor National Track & Field Championships, the VU men's 4x100m Relay team of Alec Duran (FR/La Verne, CA), Winston Lawson (FR/Santa Ana, CA), Daniel Alade (FR/Bakersfield, CA) and Quinton Alexander (SR/Las Vegas, NV) finished 2nd overall in a season best time of 42.13 but came up just 6/10th's of a second shy of the automatic qualifying standard. Junior Zach DeAtley (JR/Victorville, CA) (who is already qualified for NAIA Nationals in the Marathon) took a final shot at the 3,000m Steeplechase and raced to a career best and qualifying time of 9:31.05 finishing 8th place in Section 2 of the highly competitive field.
The Vanguard University Track & Field teams have celebrated the end of the season portion of the calendar by recognizing the award winners in 12 categories including Athlete of the Year, Most Improved, Newcomer, Most Inspirational, Champions of Character, Team Captain Leadership, All-Americans, All-GSAC, Scholar-Athlete, Four Year Lettermans, School Records, and Team of Character.
