SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Lions (9-3, 5-0) faced their toughest test of the conference slate to date during a road trip to The Master's University (11-2, 4-1). Vanguard, the seventh team in the last NAIA Coaches' Poll faced off against a team inside the Top-13 for the fifth time so far this season as the Mustangs entered ranked ninth in the country. The Blue and Gold shot out of the gate and captured a 3-1 victory.
Vanguard did not waste any time as the first chance they had on the TMU goal (97 seconds in) was a positive result behind Madison Lopp (SR/Anaheim, CA)'s cross to Anna Montemor (FR/Snohomish, WA) for the header. Then, just over nine minutes later, Lopp collected the long pass from Erica Wadell (SR/Yucaipa, CA) in the backline and then fired off the strike to take a commanding 2-0 lead. On The Master's second shot on goal, the Mustangs broke through to narrow the gap to only a goal for the Pride as Sarah Stead lined up for the corner kick and it resulted in the score by Kellian Ahearn at the 35:53 mark of the first half. Exactly two minutes later, Myranda Baca (SO/Aliso Viejo, CA) blasted a penalty kick into the back of the net to give the Blue and Gold a dominant lead.
At the break, Vanguard held a 10-2 advantage in shots taken and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. The squads were nearly even in fouls and TMU's goal keepers combined for three saves in the period. The halftime score would go unchanged in the final 45 minutes of play as the Lions blasted seven more shots on goal compared to only three total for the Mustangs. One of the shots, Jasmine Parada's kick in the 68th minute, clanged off the post. In the end, the Lions put 10 shots on goal compared to only five total for TMU. Nicole Dunn (SR/Lake Forest, CA) led the game with three shots with Haley Bruce (JR/San Diego, CA) having a match high two shots on goal.
