COSTA MESA, Calif. – Hitting the court after losing their first conference match earlier this week, the Vanguard Lions (9-7, 6-1) had one thing on their mind. Victory. After a solid last half of the week in practice, the team had superior confidence entering its matchup with The Master's University (7-10, 3-4). The Blue and Gold rode a stellar first set all the way to a 3-0 sweep of the Mustangs with set scores of 25-16,25-13,25-20.
The Lions started off with a bang, hitting .500 in the first set behind a match high 15 kills and only one error. After winning the first frame by nine points, the Pride was thirsty for more and bettered that margin with a 12 point victory in the second set. They did all the damage despite hitting at only a .200 rate thanks to superb defense that forced TMU into more errors than kills. Sensing that they could get their first home sweep of the season, the Lions outlasted a late rally attempt from the Mustangs to win the match.
Taylor Jackson (SR/Las Vegas, NV) was the top dog tonight with a match high nine kills on 18 attempts, ending with a .389 attack percentage. Hailey Gordon (JR/San Diego, CA) continues her steady play in the middle of the floor landing seven of 13 kill attempts for a .385 clip. Aubryn Coale (SO/Huntington Beach, CA) had six kills on .333 hitting. The setting duo of Kylie Garrett (FR/Ladera Ranch, CA) and Kirstin Trabert (SO/Corona, CA) finished with 17 and 12 assists respectively. Rebecca Lowden (JR/Glendora, CA) was the only player in the match with double figure digs (10) with Kamelah Noel (SO/Portland, OR) and Trabert slotting in second and third with seven and six. Vanguard owned the net with three solo blocks and 10 block assists. The Mustangs had only a pair in each category.
