COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions (8-3, 4-0) hot streak continues as they won their seventh straight game. The afternoon game against Menlo College (4-4-2, 0-3-1) saw 201 fans in attendance as Vanguard beat the (RV) Oaks 1-0 just under two minutes into the first overtime period. This marks the first OT match of the conference slate for the seventh ranked Blue and Gold and second overall.
It was a slow game for the Lions in comparison to the last five games. With an average of 30 shots per game, the 19 against Menlo was a drastic change of pace. Despite the reduction in shots, the accuracy held up as 13 shots were on goal. The entire game was a constant battle as the match remained scoreless until the 91st minute. Anna Montemor (FR/Snohomish, WA) earned the game-winning goal as the ball rebounded off of the Menlo goal keeper. The goalie for the Oaks had deflected the shot from Nikki Dunn off a set piece from just outside the 18-yard box. Montemor's goal was her seventh of the season, and keeps her leading the team in goals scored.
The Lions strong offense again proved to be a great defense. Menlo was only able to get off three shots, all of which were saved by Amanda Valentine (JR/Livermore, CA). today's win marks the sixth combinde shutout for Valentine including four straight to start conference play. Each team had eight fouls called respectively, and Menlo's goal keeper was issued a yellow card in the 91st minute.
