SANTEE, Calif. – Fresh off the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the Lions (5-3, 1-0) jumped back up in the rankings and began the week seventh in the country. They put that standing on the line in their GSAC opener at San Diego Christian (4-3, 0-1). Vanguard faced little resistance in the match ending with a 6-0 victory over the Hawks thanks to a pair of goals off the bench by Anna Montemor (FR/Snohomish, WA).
The scoring began early in the contest as Nicole Dunn (SR/Lake Forest, CA) sank the first goal of the day at the 12:14 mark, earning the credit for the game winning goal, her second GW goal on the year and third goal overall. As the game ticked into the 23rd minute, Erica Wadell (SR/Yucaipa, CA) added to the score netting her first strike of the season. Just before halftime, Montemor scored with 41:58 elapsed in the first half. At the break, the Blue and Gold held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks and outstanding 17-0 shot advantage.
Montemor bookended the intermission with another goal in the 49th minute which moved her to a team leading six goals and 13 points on the young season. Madison Lopp (SR/Anaheim, CA), last seasons' leading scorer, reached the scoreboard midway through the 61st minute off the set up from Montemor. The final strike of the day came in the 86th minute as Kim Benner (SO/Chino, CA) iced the game away with a sixth unanswered goal for the Blue and Gold.
Vanguard was constantly pushing the action and in the process was whistled for six offsides calls to only two for the Hawks. For the game, the Pride outshot SDC 32-2. The San Diego goalkeepers split the contest in half and each Hawk saved seven shots per half. For the Lions, Amanda Valentine (JR/Livermore, CA) was untested in 65 minutes of action before turning the gloves over to Jessica Taukeiaho (SR/Rancho Cucamonga, CA) who recorded the one save for the game.
Dunn took a match high seven shots, with four of them being put on frame while Montemor was just behind with six shots and five on target. In all, 20 of the 32 shots taken were put between the pipes. For the whole 90 minutes of play, 19 members of the Blue and Gold saw action with no one playing more than 80 minutes.
