PALOS VERDES, Calif. – After a blowout match last week, the Lions (5-2) had a week off before heading to Marymount California University (3-2-1). Despite another strong offensive game, the Lions were unable to defeat Marymount and ended up with a loss, 2-1. The Blue and Gold entered the game ranked 17th in the nation while the Mariners were slotted in 24th in last week's NAIA Coaches; Top 25 Poll.
In the first half, the Lions started off strong and earned the first goal from Ruben Arellano, Jr. (SO/Hawthorne, CA) earning his second goal for the season, but that would be the only goal scored for the Lions. The Lions lead would hold for just over five minutes before Marymount would earn two goals back to back in the 18th and 19th minute respectively, and, by the half, the final score was posted.
Vanguard's offense kept pressure up with 13 shots overall and eight shots on goal. In goal, Brandon Gomez (SR/Los Angeles, CA) earned a season high with eight saves. There were 12 fouls with one yellow card called on the Lions as opposed to Marymount's 21 fouls and two yellow cards.
