COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard University Athletics is pleased to announce the hire of Kayla Gonzalez as the latest addition to the Vanguard Athletic Training staff. Holding MS, ATC, and EMT certifications, Gonzalez joins the Lions with experience at the University of South Carolina working with the football team, the Columbia City Ballet, and Claflin University where she worked with track and field, cross country, men's basketball, and softball teams.
"I am beyond excited to be joining Vanguard athletics and am privileged to be a part of an amazing sports medicine team that cares for and encourages our student-athletes towards success on a daily basis," Gonzalez said after accepting the position.
As a student, she had stops at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Fullerton Community College just up the road, and worked with the LA Kiss in the Arena Football League. Currently, she holds membership in three professional organizations including the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), South Carolina Athletic Trainers' Association (SCATA), and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
Throughout her schooling experience, she received six scholarships and awards from 2011 to 2017 highlighted by the Bill Chambers Athletic Training Student Award and the NATA Foundation District Eight Scholarship. To date, Gonzalez has two professional publications under her belt including Changes in Blood Oxygen Saturation Levels During Mild Hyperbaric Chamber Treatment and The Effectiveness of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as a Treatment for Postconcussion Symptoms. She will soon publish a third on work-life balance.
Gonzalez joins the Vanguard Athletic Training staff directed by head athletic trainer Darin Voigt who has headed up the department since 2005 and Kelly Wilson who rejoined the staff in 2015. Additionally, Lindsey Bryson and Adam Graham have been hired as athletic training interns for the 2017-2018 school year. The five trainer department will conduct all treatment and prevention of injuries for the 13 intercollegiate sports offered by Vanguard, consisting over just over 260 student-athletes.
