COSTA MESA, Calif. – On Friday, June 16th Vanguard University welcomed the family of Dean Harvey (SCC Alum from the 1985 World Series team) in a special ground breaking ceremony for the baseball field renovation. With a target date of November 1st, the renovated field with feature new dugouts, state of the art tension netting system for the backstop, improved spectator experience included branding through the facility, new field service and pro style grass infield and outfield, as well as a new irrigation system. The project has been spearheaded by Jeff Motske and the rest of the committee includes Steve Castle, Mark Deushane, Tim Fortugno, Donovan McReynolds, Ron Nelson, Cindy Overeem, and Mike Peterson.
Vanguard Baseball has been a leader in fulfilling Vanguard University's mission and has supported the NAIA Champions of Character Initiative. It has provided student-athletes with an unparalleled collegiate experience focused on the development of the whole person - spiritually, academically, and athletically while pursuing competitive excellence on the field. This campaign will serve to enhance the program's ability to carry out this mission and to continue to equip the next generation of leaders in our community.
Vanguard University has set a goal of $500,000 to complete the vision for this project which will launch the baseball program to new heights both in the GSAC and across the NAIA. Mannie Adams from Sports Field Services, who has previously performed field renovations on both the soccer and softball fields, is working closely with Consolidated Contracting Services on the project. Tony Elias-Calles, who is serving as the General Contractor on the field project, is the father of Vanguard Lion and first baseman Shane Elias-Calles (JR/Mission Viejo, CA).
