LA MIRADA, Calif.- Following their 20th consecutive victory against Hope, the third ranked Vanguard University Lions (24-2, 12-1) were finally bested by the 17th ranked Biola University Eagles (20-6, 11-3) 71-47. As hard as it is to see the Pride's incredible run come to an end, it's made all the worse by the fact that it was ended by their bitter Biola rivals. This defeat came down to a variety of different factors, with Claire Lamunu (SR/Kampala, Uganda)'s 20 points not being enough to win the game.
With Jaime Goff (SR/Oregon City, OR) getting the first two points on the board, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Lions would roll onto another victory. However, the Eagles took the lead only a minute later, from the three point line. Another bucket from Goff 17 seconds later, saw the Lions take the lead for the second and final time. The remainder of the first frame was almost all Biola, with Lamunu only scoring two more points for the Blue and Gold. The Eagles took a 12 point lead going into the second period.
The following two frames was more of the same for the Eagles. Their offense ran smooth, with DeMoria White matching Lamunu's 20 point contribution. On the other side of things, the Lions were far less clinical in their approach. While the Eagles converted 60 percent of their shots, the Pride was only able to convert 35 percent of their shots. Furthermore, the usually devastating Lamunu was limited to only eight points for the first three frames.
The fourth and final frame of the game saw the Lions show signs of life. After being comfortably outscored in the first three frames of the contest, the Pride outscored the Eagles 18-8 to close out the game. Lamunu let out her frustration on the basket, scoring 12 points, while Christiana Gerostergiou (JR/Thessaloniki, Greece) scored her fourth three pointer of the night. Victoria Chea (FR/Murrieta, CA) got the final two points on the board, with a layup in the final minute of the contest.
