ROCKLIN, Calif. – Playing their first game on the road in conference was a battle between William Jessup (12-5, 2-1) and Vanguard (11-4, 1-1) and the home team held on down the stretch for the 75-71 victory. Malachi Hoosein (JR/Norwalk, CA) and Brandon Brothers (SO/Pasadena, CA) combined for seven made three pointers and each scored 17 points in the defeat. Shacquille Dawkins (FR/Santa Clarita, CA) was right behind with 14 points. Zach Allmon (SR/San Luis Obispo, CA) posted eight posts and 12 boards before fouling out of the contest – the first time all year he has.
The Warriors shot well in the first half, but both teams made the same number of field goals (14) and three pointers (4). The seven point margin at the half time intermission came because WJU connected on seven more free throw attempts. In the second half, the Lions outscored the Warriors 34-31, but the halftime decefit was too much to overcome. Vanguard held William Jessup scoreless from behind the arc, but once again the teams made the exact same number of field goals (12). For the contest the Lions trailed in points scroed in the paint (36-24) and field goal shooting percentage. Vanguard forced 11 turnovers on the day.
"We are continuing to learn what it takes to win big games on the road in the GSAC," head coach Rhett Soliday said after the game. "We put ourselves in position several times to make a push down the stretch, but couldn't make enough plays to get over the hump. Credit William Jessup for playing a great game and closing it out with timely baskets."
