COSTA MESA, Calif. – Grand View (Iowa) entered the Vanguard Thanksgiving Tournament with an impressive 6-1 record, but fell victim to the Lions and a 33-point effort by senior Preston Wynne (Wellpinit, Wash.) on Friday evening in The Pit. VU improves to 6-2 on the year with the 84-76 win.

The Lions' DeAngelo Jones (Cheney, Wash.) and Wynne combined to hit three 3-pointers in the first four minutes of Friday's contest to take an early 11-10 lead on the Vikings.

Midway through the first, after ten competitive minutes, Vanguard built its largest lead, 30-19, following three more deep buckets on consecutive possessions from Wynne.

Senior Swing Chuang (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) split a pair of GVU defenders with a pretty spin move down low on the Pride's next trip and junior Chris Gorman (Oceanside, Calif.) kept VU's 11-point (34-23) edge intact with a short jumper in the paint at the 8:51 mark.

Wynne struck again from downtown to stretch the margin to 14 (37-24) at 7:37 and managed another, his sixth, as the clock wound down before the break.

The Lions went into the locker room with a 13-point (43-30) edge beind Wynne's 20-point performance.

Freshman Zach Allmon (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), who played nine first half minutes, did the brunt of the VU rebounding work, picking up seven boards to go along with his 9 points.

For 12 minutes in the second, Vanguard maintained a comfortable lead behind aggressive play from Jones and Gorman who scored eight apiece in the stretch.

Slowly, however, the Vikings began to make defensive stops and after a series of timely offensive plays, GVU found itself trailing the Lions by just 5 points (70-65) at the 7:30 mark.

Grand View kept the game within five as late as 3:54 and had a chance to cut it to three, but Gorman stepped up to take a clutch charge on the Vikings' fast break and Wynne rewarded his teammates' defensive effort with his seventh 3-point bucket on the next trip down to give VU a bit of breathing room (77-69) with 3:05 to go.

Lights-out Wynnesanity iced his eighth 1:30 later from five-feet beyond the arc and the Pride closed the game on the charity stripe to claim the 84-76 victory.

Wynne went 11-for-19 from the field en route to a season-high 33 points.

Gorman, Jones and Allmon finished with 15, 13 and 10, respectively, while junior Keith Mason (Carson, Calif.) notched six points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 22 minutes.

Vanguard returns to the court on Saturday to take on the La Sierra Golden Eagles. The competition is scheduled for 6:00pm. Concordia and Grand View will play in the early game, starting at 4:00pm.
