COSTA MESA, Calif. – Five Vanguard seniors (Sarah Warner, Megan Hill, Paige Sikes, Jordan Davidson & Kayla Arenas) walked away with a win in the final regular season home contest of their careers on Wednesday afternoon at the brand new VU Soccer Field. The No. 10 Lions defeated Golden State Athletic Conference opponent San Diego Christian 2-0 to improve to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in league match-ups.
After nearly 44 minutes of scoreless first-half action, Vanguard had a shot to break the deadlock on a penalty kick. Senior Kayla Arenas (Fullerton, Calif.) drew the foul on the break, tackled in the box by a Hawk's defender to put junior Makenna Yarbor (El Cajon, Calif.) in the pressure situation.
Unfortunately for the Lions, SDC keeper Sandra Castro made a great stop on the initial kick and on the subsequent shot off of the rebound to hold Vanguard scoreless before the break.
Arenas came out motivated in the second period, breaking the tie just 1:30 into the half to net her 14th of the season for The Pride off of a right side cross from junior Jennifer Martin (La Mirada, Calif.).
Another VU senior, Jordan Davidson (Tucson, Ariz.), benefitted from a Martin pass two and a half minutes later to put the Blue and Gold up 2-0, though sophomore Liliana Ruiz (Madera, Calif.) made the initial pass to secure the first part of the Lions' double assist on the play.
Castro had a great day for the Hawks, compiling 12 saves in the loss.
Vanguard's Lauren Terry (Corona, Calif.) picked up three saves and the win for VU.
The Lions outshot the Hawks 23-9 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Vanguard's final match of the regular season will take place on Nov. 2nd at Westmont (1:00pm).
