Costa Mesa, California - Costa Mesa Tennis Center - No. 11 ranked Vanguard University hosted USCD, ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II, for a nonconference matchup at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. Playing for the third day in a row, the injury-riddled Lions gave their best effort, but came up a little short, falling 6-3 to the UC San Diego Tritons.

The teams split the first two doubles matches with the Lions winning in the top slot, as Gabriela Bergmanova and Nina Pudar collaborated to win 8-4 over the top Triton pair. However, UCSD won 8-1 in the third matchup and took a 2-1 lead into singles action.

The Tritons came out strong in singles, winning the first four matches completed, which was more than enough to clinch the team victory. Bergmanova posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1, and Ekaterina Gabashvili outplayed her No. 3 counterpart 7-6, 6-2 for VU's final two points, finalizing the 6-3 score.

Vanguard head coach Mattias Johansson acknowledged the effort and health of his team during an extremely difficult week with four women's matches on the schedule. "We had a lot of injured bodies (4 of 6) which makes it difficult to perform to the level we wish, but most girls were fighting and did their best. We as coaches can accept a loss when we do our best, since we have no substitutes and the girls have to play no matter what."

Things do not get any easier for the Lions either as Vanguard has three GSAC matches coming up in the next four days. The Lions, 2-4 overall, host No. 7-ranked Azusa Pacific on Saturday, travel down to No. 9 Point Loma on Monday, and over to The Master's College on Tuesday. The eight-day swing, beginning on Tuesday of this week and ending next Tuesday, includes a total of six matches which would be difficult even for a healthy team. Saturday's GSAC match against APU begins at 1:00 p.m.
