Nelson Advances to NAIA 400m Final

Marion, Ind. - (Outdoor Sports Complex at Indiana Wesleyan University) - 61st Annual Men's and 32nd Annual Women's NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships - Sophomore speedster Kapree Nelson was the only Vanguard Lion to compete in day two of the three-day 2012 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marion, Indiana. Hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University for the third straight year, the NAIA Championships were not a new situation for VU's second-year qualifier. Running on the same track where she placed seventh a year ago, Nelson advanced to tomorrow's final race in the women's 400 meter dash.

Qualifying with a time of 55.78, Nelson, who won her second consecutive individual GSAC title in the 400m in April, began today's preliminary round with the seventh-fastest entry time. Running in the second heat today, Nelson finished fifth with a time of 56.14. Edging the next fastest runner by .21, Nelson narrowly qualified for the final event with a ninth place overall finish out of the 17 runners entered in the race. She will be one of nine sprinters in tomorrow's final competing for NAIA All-America honors which will be awarded to the top eight runners.

In addition, there will be four other Lions seeking all-america honors in various events, including junior Megan Williams (1500m), senior Chelsea Van Cott (3,000 meter steeplechase), and Kimberly Kent and Matt Johnson in the marathon. Tomorrow will be the most exciting and busiest day for the Lions with a lot on the line. Regardless of their finish, Van Cott and Johnson will be competing in their final collegiate events tomorrow with one last chance to put their name on the NAIA All-America list. Van Cott is seeded seventh in the steeplechase while Johnson is the 13th seed in the men's marathon with over 50 runners entered. Williams has the 12th-fastest entry time in the 1500m and Kent looks to have the best chance but toughest challenge as the fourth-seed in the women's marathon. Both Williams and Kent are eligible for one more track season with the Lions.
